How do we train?
We are a group of gymnasts of skill levels ranging from complete beginners to competitive gymnasts. Accordingly, average attendance of our training sessions varies from every once in a while to several times a week. Whilst doing gymnastics is in all probability the best method for conditioning, we also have some strength & conditioning (S&C) sessions available on Saturdays. All sessions have a British Gymnastics coach present who leads a structured session who those who want to take part, but there is also always the option to train independently too. We warm-up together as a whole club and then split off into structured or independent/gymnast-led. While gymnastics can be a competitive sport and we do tend to get ambitious in the run up to Varsity, we understand that the ultimate aim is to experiment, progress individually, relax from academic work, make friends, and have fun.
When do we train?
See the Termcard tab for up-to-date training info. We train at the University Sports Centre on Tuesdays (8-10pm) and Sundays (10am-12pm), as well as at fully-equipped gymnasiums on Wednesdays (8-9:30pm, Huntingdon Gymnastics Club by carshare) and Fridays (8-10pm, Cambridge Gymnastics Academy). There are also some Strength and Conditioning sessions at the University Sports Centre from 1:30pm to 2:30pm on Saturdays.
Are you a newbie and not sure where to start? Come to our dedicated beginner taster sessions on Sunday 13th and Sunday 20th October 2024 (10am-12pm at the University Sports Centre on Philippa Fawcett Drive). Or any one of our regular Tuesday or Sunday sessions! Done gymnastics before and want to experience a proper gym right from the beginning? Come straight to our Friday Cambridge Gymnastics Academy sessions. Everyone gets two free sessions (any Tues/Fri/Sun) before having to purchase membership.
Where do we train?
University Sports Centre: We train in the main Sports Hall, which is new and shiny but only has basic gym equipment (floor mats, air track, parallel bars, a pommel horse, a low and a high beam, a trampette and springboards). Nonetheless it is perfectly suited for staying in shape and practicing core skills on the above apparatuses.
Cambridge Gymnastics Academy: A dedicated gymnasium in Arbury, Cambridge within cycling/walking distance of the city centre. This has a sprung floor, foam pit, vault, parallel bars, asymmetric bars, high bar, beams, static training rings, and trampoline. There is also a low-height training pommel and bucket.
Huntingdon Gymnastics Club: A fully-equipped gymnasium in Huntingdon, which we travel to by carshare. Carshare is organised each week by CUOGC and covered in your membership fee. The gym has two rooms, with full men's and women's apparatus. For example, there are two sprung floors, two vaults, beams, asymmetric bars, high bar, a tumble track, large foam pit, parallel bars, full-height pommel horses, and full rings.
